Ex-senator Gordon Smith now represents broadcasters as voice for free, local TV

Gordon Smith believes few things are more American than a square meal with peas, carrots and corn. Of course the former senator from Oregon may be biased, since his family supplies much of the nation's frozen veggies.

Fry aims to make Ferrari more ?creative?

Ferrari technical chief Pat Fry says his biggest aim is to make the team more 'creative' in its design thinking to help lift its form against rivals. Having replaced Aldo Costa following a staffing reshuffle last month, Fry has been evaluating the way Ferrari works in its push to close the gap on Red Bull Racing. Fry said on Saturday that there will be changes to the way Ferrari's wind tunnel programme was utilised from next week, but he believes that there was the necessary brain power already at the outfit to help it achieve its aims.

Microsoft inks Android patent deal with Itronix, causes more heads to explode

We've already noted our slip into Bizarro World, a strange and topsy-turvy land where -- thanks to patent-infringement claims -- Microsoft strikes licensing deals with Android device makers. Redmond has used a carrot-and-stick strategy thus far, suing competing manufacturers (Barnes and Noble, Motorola) while reaching a protective royalty agreement with HTC, which, not coincidentally, also makes Windows Phones. Today, another company joins the licensee list: General Dynamics Itronix, known for its rugged computers, some of which do run Windows. Neither company offered much in the way of details, other than declaring that Itronix will pay royalties, but we've no reason to believe it's too different from HTC's arrangement. See the press release after the break for an excellent example of terse, unrevealing business-speak.

Viralheat Grabs $4.25 Million For Affordable Social Media Tracking And Intelligence

Viralheat, the social media measurement tool that allows content producers to monitor consumer-generated content on the Web in realtime, announced today that it has closed a $4.25 million series A round of funding. The round was led by the venture firm Mayfield Fund and adds to the $75K of seed capital Viralheat raised back in December 2009. The startup plans to use this new infusion of capital to expand its engineering team, create new products and services for consumer analytics and engagement, and accelerate customer acquisition and revenue growth. As it is, Viralheat faces plenty of competition in the social media analytics and tracking space from Radian6, Visible Measures, Omgili, ScoutLabs, and Omniture to name a few, but the top factor that distinguishes Viralheat from other startups is its affordability. For $10 per month, users can track 10 profiles on the site, and for $40, you can track 50 profiles.
