Nintendo to release Flame Red 3DS console next month, sunglasses not included

Better dust off your finest pair of shades, because this Flame Red Nintendo 3DS is on its way to the States. The console, which launched earlier this summer in Japan as the Red Flare, will hit stores next month (alongside the new Star Fox 64 3D game), joining a 3DS lineup that already features Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue. The company will also be releasing two new games this winter -- Super Mario 3D Land in November and Mario Kart 7 in December -- in the hopes of rectifying its disappointing Q2 earnings report with a strong holiday campaign. Only time will tell whether or not it has any effect on Nintendo's bottom line, but if you're interested in adding a touch of Santa-like cheer to your yuletide gaming season, you can grab a Flame Red console on September 9th, for $170. Find more information in the full PR, after the break.

Mark Cuban-Backed JungleCents Ushers AskMen Into The Daily Deals Space

Screen shot 2011-08-10 at 12.58.15 PMDuring its grinding transition into the digital era, the publishing industry has been grasping at straws to find ways to evolve its revenue models. Even as time marches on, publishing companies by and large, continue to struggle with how to most effectively monetize their content and add supplementary (or even primary) revenue streams. JungleCents, the Mark Cuban-backed startup, is ushering men's lifestyle magazine AskMen into the daily deals space in an attempt to help the publication take advantage of supplemental revenue streams -- all thanks to vouchers.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Study: Vancouver Merchants Badly Misjudge Effect of Protected Bike Lanes

In Downtown Vancouver, local merchants wildly overestimate the number of their customers who drive. (The numbers on the left side add up to more than 100 percent apparently because of how the question to merchants was formatted.) Image: Stantec Consulting for City of Vancouver Few groups speak more loudly in debates over the reallocation of street [...]

Are People "Cutting the Cord" Just People Who Can't Afford Cable? [Cable]

193,000 people quit their paid television plans last quarter. Sounds like a lot, and it is! But as any horse-breeder will tell you (I would guess?): it's about quality, not quantity. And the people leaving cable behind, GigaOm reports, aren't the ones the cable companies care about. While high-value consumers—the folks who'll shell out for multiple DVR boxes and fire up the VOD services—are staying and paying, it's the basic cable grunts who are saying goodbye. More »

Microsoft Might Be Thinking Beyond Facebook

So last week, Microsoft posted what looked like a social-networking project--codenamed "Tulalip"--onto the Web URL socl.com. "With Tulalip you can find what you need and Share what you know easier than ever," read the page's opening text, above a series of what looked like user-profile photos.

That page was subsequently yanked, replaced with a note suggesting the whole thing was an accident: "Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the Web ... We didn't mean to, honest."

As I mentioned on eWEEK a little while ago, Microsoft has two good reasons to explore the possibility of branded social networking: Google and Facebook.

What's that, you say? Microsoft already owns a minority chunk of Facebook? That's right, and Redmond's leveraging that relationship to the hilt: baking Facebook features into its Bing search engine and offering up newly acquired Skype for Facebook video chat.

By itself, that could be enough for Microsoft to combat archrival Google's growing influence in the social-networking sphere. But that minority stake also means Microsoft has precious little control over Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who, well, sort of has a reputation for marching to his own drummer. Sure, the relationship between Microsoft and Facebook is pretty tight at the moment--but what happens if it turns sour?

In light of that, it seems inevitable that a company as large and ostensibly forward-thinking as Microsoft could consider how to best establish a branded social-networking presence beholden to nobody. Hence this weird accident (or "accident") with Tulalip. Nonetheless, Microsoft still needs to tread carefully--Google Plus is apparently enjoying an early-adopter surge, and Facebook remains the dominant force in social networking.

Tokyo Flash's Eye-Poppin' 3D Watch Isn't Actually 3D [Watches]

Tokyo Flash has turned another watch from concept to reality, and this one's 3D! Well, kind of. Using an optical illusion rather than the kind of 3D we normally see on Giz's pages, the time appears to leap out in a 3D cube. More »

Chinese Communist Party Emulates America?s Socialist Parking Policies

Around the Network today: The Pricetag for Parking in China: Right now, parking policies in China actually seem to be more market-oriented than in the United States. Residential parking spaces in Beijing fetch as much as $125,000, which Paul Barter at Network blog Reinventing Parking says is a sign that parking is currently priced at about [...]
